Some of you might have seen the film Rob Bell made entitled Drops Like Stars, but this review is about the book. At only 129 pages with about half of them being pictures this book is a quick read. It is in fact one of those books that is easy to summarize because it is basically what Rob says it is, "A Few Thoughts on Creativity and Suffering." For the most part you just get to contemplate some thoughts he has had on these two issues.
I think my general reflections on this book will give you the most insight into it. I was sort of left at the end thinking - what did I just read. However, I think I understand it more now because I have looked up pictures associated with this book and when I did, I found a picture of a piece of white paper with lots of thoughts jotted everywhere on it. I think this sums up the book - lots of now somewhat organized musings that led to a book. For the record, the pictures are entertaining and the stories worth thinking about.
Let's just say it is definitely a Rob Bell book - makes you think a little about stuff you might not have thought before. For example, he tells the story of a guy who applied to NYU and in the essay he provided to the university - and for summaries sake - he basically contended that he knew everything and was great at everything. However, he was not just great at everything - he was great at odd things, like full-contact origami and cooking wonderful four course meals using only a toaster oven. The result - acceptance to NYU. Why? Because he was out of the box - just like this book.
At the end of the day, if you want a quick and interesting read, grab this book. However, if you are looking to be inspired I wouldn't say this book does the job. And who knows, you might be able to reflect how to live as a believer in some way from his book, but at the end of the day - just some random thoughts.
